FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Where can I install the pet door?
FireSafe Pet Door products are designed to be installed from the living area of your home into the attached garage wall.
Can I install the door between my bedroom and the attached garage?
*IMPORTANT* Do not install any pet door in a bedroom wall that is attached to the garage. It is illegal, as fire codes prohibit any opening into a sleeping area from the garage wall.
Can I install it myself or do I need a professional?
We strongly recommend that you hire a handyman, carpenter, contractor or professional installer. However, FireSafe Pets Pet Doors can be installed by a homeowner with good Do It Yourself and carpentry abilities.
How do I pick a location to install a pet door?
When looking for the best place to install your pet door there are several factors to keep in mind. First is to look at not only where your pet will be exiting the home from the inside, but also where your pet will be exiting into the garage.
Our pet doors are designed to be installed between existing wall studs. One easy way to find out where your studs are, is to knock on the drywall and you will hear the sound change from a hollow sound to a solid sound. The hollow sound is in-between the wall studs.
Most garages have a step down for the interior to the garage concrete, be sure to allow for a step out of the pet door to allow a safe exit.
Also sometimes putting in 2 doors is a good idea, a fire rated pet door from house to garage and a regular pet door from garage to the outside.
How do I choose the right size door for my pet?
Please feel free to use the Pet Chart as a guide for the more common breeds. Remember that you want to select a pet door that will clear the tallest pet’s shoulders by 1-2″…and have a low enough step over rise to allow for easy navigation given the pets breed, age and mobility now and in the future.
Do smaller pets, like cats, have any problems using larger pet door sizes?
Even the large size can be used by the household cat or small dog. You will notice that while dogs go head first through the pet door flaps, cats will use their paws to gently push the corner of the flap.
What is the biggest dog your pet doors can accommodate?
We have pet doors that can accommodate pets up to 95 pounds but it depends on the height and width of your pet and how much your pet weighs. You should make sure it seems like the right fit for your pet.
Does your company offer installation of the pet doors?
Not at this time. We recommend you do an internet search for a contractor or handy man near you.
How do I determine what door to get for my wall thickness?
